Does the trailor coupling require TÜV certification?

All trailor couplings that already were inspected according to European standard (test mark starting with „e“) no longer require TÜV-certification. It is sufficient when the installation instructions of the AHK are left in the vehicle. They service as certificates. Upon the next change in the vehicle documents, like for example a change of residence or entry of an additional tire-wheel combination it is required to enter the trailor coupling on the vehicle documents.

For trailor couplings with a German test mark (M or F), TÜV certification and immediate entry after installation of the coupling on the vehicle documents is necessary.

The trailor couplings with single approval (TP-test mark) have an expert option created separately for every trailor coupling. After installation of the coupling, TÜV certification and entry in the vehicle documents is necessary.

What does Check-Control mean?

AlsCheck-Controls are installations in the vehicle that monitor the lighting of the vehicle and show possible interferences. This display is done visually or acoustically and can be contained in informational displays or board computers. As the trailor needs to be operated separately from the vehicle lighting on these vehicles, so-called electrical kits for Check Control or expandable electrical kits with Check-Control-interface are necessary to exclude damages of the vehicle electrics. Electrical kits with Check-Control-interface must be supplemented with an expansion set if it contains a Check-Control-System.

How do I find out whether my vehicle has Check-Control?

Remove the light bulb from the back or braking light of the vehicle and turn on the ignition. Then turn on the light and step on the brake. If the dashboard shows you an error now, your vehicle has Check-Control.

What it automatic level adjustment?

If a vehicle is equipped with automatic level adjustment, if always pumps itself back up to initial height during loading. This pumping up can occur immediately after loading or after a short drive. In case of manual level adjustment you have to fill in or let out air manually.

What does REC (on several new Opel models) mean?

On the models of the Opel Astra H and Zafira B as of year of construction 2004 the so-called REC (Rear-Electric-Center) is located behind the left side panelling in the trunk.

Differentiation is done between the models with and without preparation. In the models with preparation there is a vacant 14-pole-plug (like Scart) in this REC. If this is the case, please order the electrical kit „with preparation“. If your vehicle does not have this prepared plug, please use the electrical kit „without preparation“.

Always check whether your vehicle has the above-mentioned preparation, only the electrical kit with or without preparation (depending on the vehicle) is fitting.

What does vehicle-trailor-stabilization mean?

The electronic vehicle-trailor-stabilization is a subfunction of the electronic stabilization program ESP (also DSC, DSCT ...). The system recognizes an instability of the vehicles that is caused by not adapted driving speed. With purposeful reduction of the engine torque and adequate braking of certain tires the connection is stabilized. The vehicle-trailor-coupling thus provides an important contribution to the increase of driving safety.

What does ESP mean?

ESP is the electronic-stability-program.

What is a Parktronic-System (PDC)?

Parktronic is also called EPH, PDC, APS or simply parking aid. Due to the parking aid the space behind and often also in front of the vehicle is monitored and possible hindrances are displayed visually or also acoustically as soon as the reverse gear is put in. In case of an acoustic signal the frequency (time interval of the tones) is increased the closer the vehicle gets to a hindrance.

What is a flasher unit?

The flasher unit, often also called "Blink relay" controls the blink impulse to the blinkers on the vehicle and if applicable also on the trailor. Errors in the function are displayed through a change of the blinker frequency in the control lamps. Usually, the flasher unit is installed in the central electrics, it can however also be combined with the warning light switch and other control units.. For operation with trailor the original flasher unit in combination with a relay electrical kit is exchanged for a flasher unit with C2-funciton and an additional control is installed. Flasher units are available with different connection occupations that must partially be adapted upon installation of a C2-flasher unit over adapters.

What is a C2-control lamp?

The C2-control lamp must be installed in sight of the driver or is already integrated in the instrument panel of the vehicle. It is responsible for the monitoring of the trailor blinkers according to legal regulations. The function and the failure of the trailer blinkers is reported by cooperating with the original control lamps.

What is a negative activation rear fog lamp?

If 12 V are connected to the live cable that leads to the rear fog lamp after turning on the lights, the rear fog lamp has negative activation. Vehicles of the manufacturers Suzuki, Chrysler and Pontiac can have a negative activation rear fog lamp. You can check this by turning on the ignition and the light, then a voltage of 12 V must already be connected to a cable to the rear fog lamp, the rear fog lamp itself must be turned off though.

What does trailing load mean?

The trailing load is the load with which the vehicle and the trailor coupling may pull a trailor. Depending on the vehicle type this can vary. The admissible trailing loads for your vehicle are listed in the vehicle documents:

[1] old vehicle documents

- braked trailing load under no 28
- unbraked trailing load under no 29

[2] new vehicle documents

- braked trailing load under O.1
- unbraked trailing load under O.2

The maximum admissible trailing load of the trailor coupling is recorded in the installation instructions. The weights stated in the vehicle documents may not be exceeded. This does not mean that for example if the registered trailing load of the vehicle is 1000 kg you may not pull a trailor with a maximum total load of 1300 kg. The trailor must however then transport 300 kg payload.

What does bearing load mean?

This is the load that may be vertically applied to the spherical head. The bearing load is usually located between 40 and 200 kg, depending on the vehicle type. The bearing load of the trailor coupling and the vehicle may not be exceeded.

The admissible bearing load of the vehicle is listed din the vehicle manual. The bearing load of the trailor coupling is listed on the type plate and in the installation instructions.

What Do I need a thermal shield for?

As the vehicle is thus also the engine is under more strain with trailor operation, the average temperature of the exhaust unit increases. In order to protect the fuel line, cable and the underside of the vehicle from the hotter exhaust while driving with a trailor, an additional thermal shield is necessary for some vehicle models. If this is the case for your vehicle, it is shown as an accessory for the trailor coupling we offer and must be installed along with the trailor coupling.

How does a theft protection for a trailor work?

The theft protection for trailors is installed in the coupling casing of the trailor. The mechanism of the theft protection is opened using an Allen key. Then, the theft protection in the trailor is locked, possibly followed by the application of a handling film

Which trailor coupling can I install on vehicles with parking aid (PDC)?

We generally recommend a removable trailor coupling. When installing a rigid trailor coupling the spherical head may enter the recording range of the sensors, so that the parking aid (PDC) constantly records a hindrance even though this is the spherical head of the trailor coupling.

Which trailor coupling is adequate for bike carriers?

For bike carriers we recommend a rigid or fully automatic removable trailor coupling. These trailor couplings are designed for high loads. Hand lever systems are inadequate due to great occurring leverage through a bike carrier, as it usually leads to premature wear of the coupling mechanism.

What is to be considered for the trailor coupling when purchasing a bike carrier?

Here oyu need to check what bearing load the trailor coupling has and which minimum bearing load resp. D-value is necessary for the assembly of the bike carrier. This data is available in our online shop under article details. Please also consider the inherent weight of the bike carrier. To calculate how heavy the bikes may be at a maximum, you must subtract the inherent weight of the bike carrier from the bearing load of the trailor coupling. The result is the maximum load that bike carrier may have.

When do I require an expansion set for continuous current resp,. continuous current and ground?

You require this expansion set when you for example want to pull a horse trailor with inside lighting or a motorhome with refrigerator operation.

In addition, there is an expansion set for continuous voltage and charge line. It is adequate for motorhomes trailors with own battery. Charging the battery while driving is thus possible.

What is the difference between a 7- and 13-pole electrical kit?

The 7-pole electrical kit is usually used for small load trailors. Connecting the reverse light is not possible.

With the 13-pole electrical kit, reverse light, continuous voltage and charge line can be used on the trailor. This electrical kit is especially adequate for horse trailors, bike carriers and motorhome trailors.

What does relay electrical kit?

The delivery scope of the electrical kit contains a control lamp (also called C2-lamp) that is responsible for the trailor blinker monitoring. The installation of the control lamp must be done in the field of vision of the driver.

What does databus-electrical kit mean?

The databus electrical kit is directly connected to the databus system in the vehicle. A defect on the trailor is displayed through the system already available in the vehicle. By activation other systems like e.g. PDC-deactivation in case of trailor operation or vehicle-trailor-stabilization can be sued. No installation of a control lamps is necessary.

What does Top Tronic-electrical kit?

The scope of delivery of the electrical kit includes a trailor control device (also called module) that is responsible for the trailor blinker monitoring. A defective blinker on the trailor is displayed with an increased blinker frequency in the vehicle.

It is important that the majority of the modules are supplied with 12 Volt continuous voltage for fault free operation of the module. More information about the installation of the electrical kit in your vehicle is available in the model installation instruction.

What is the difference between Top Tronic and databus?

The Top-Tronic-electrical kit is an analogous electrical kit. The light signals for the trailor lighting are tapped in parallel to the signals on the vehicle.

The databus electrical kit is a digital system. The function can be compared to a network of computers. The electrical kit is connected to the „Network“ of the vehicle. In most cases coding/activation is necessary.

What does activation mean?

Activation means that the electrical kit must be activated so that all functions of the electrical kit can be used. This can usually be done in any specialist workshop by using diagnosis testers. Usually functions like rear fog lights or PDC deactivation are only possible after activation.

What does diagnosis capability mean?

This is exclusively possible for databus electrical kits. By using a diagnosis tester an error reading can be done in a specialist workshop.

What is a rigid trailor coupling?

In a rigid trailor coupling the spherical head is connected with the crossbeam in a fixed manner (screwed or welded) and thus always remains visible. Even if the spherical head of the trailor coupling is screwed it is not admissible to remove it as in this case the operating license of the vehicle becomes void.

What is a removable trailor coupling?

With a removable trailor coupling you are able to take off the spherical head. The spherical head always needs to be removed if not use. There are 2 removable system. One, the hand and lever system, and the other one, the fully automatic system.

What does fully automatic system mean?

Unlocking the ball bar is done with a turnwheel or a locking lever. By pulling out or pushing the turnwheel it can be turned until it locks. Only then is it possible to remove the ball bar. When replacing it, it is pressed into the socket with the turnwheel tightened until the turnwheel recoils an thus locks. The advantage of the fully automatic system is that is lockable and adequate for all types of trailors. In addition, the fully automatic system is characterized by high operating comfort and an especially high durability and long lifespan.

What does hand and lever system mean?

Removing the ball bar with this mechanism is done by unlocking or loosening a lever resp. a union nut. Only then is it possible to remove the ball bar. To replace the ball bar it must re-entered into the intake, the lever must lock resp. the nut must be tightened again by hand. This system is exclusively adequate for small professional trailors. In some cases this system can also be locked with accessories.

What is the difference between a hand and lever system and a fully automatic system?

The advantage of the fully automatic system is the simple operability, the long lifespan and that these systems are lockable and adequate for all trailors. The lever systems are adequate for occasional use and professional trailors. The advantage is the low price.

Why do bike carrier require a 13-pole electrical kit?

According to StvZo § 49 a it is required that all lamps on the vehicle are shown on the trailor, if one is used. The 13-pole electrical kit fulfils this function exclusively.

What is the advantage of a 13pole electrical kit?

The 13pole electrical kit is already required for many new trailors (reverse gear lamp is available on the trailor). This electrical kit offers you all options. You can use a bike carrier, a recreational vehicle and with a 7-pole adapter also mall professional trailors. In addition oyu have the option to use for example the inside lighting of a horse trailor or a refrigerator in the motorhome trailor by using the expansion set for continuous current and ground.

What is the difference between a universal and a specific electrical kit?

The universal electrical kit fits many vehicles without prepared cable harness. However, every cable must be connected to the rear lights of the vehicle individually with cable connectors. Every light function must be measured on the respective rear light cable. The cable lengths are not cut for the vehicle length. The vehicle-specific electrical kit is on the contrary usually made for the respective vehicle regarding cable lengths and plugs. The assembly of this electrical kit is easier because the installation instruction was created for the vehicle and the plugs can usually be directly connected to the rear lights or certain points.

What is a universal electrical kit?

It is an electrical kit that fits several vehicle types and is connected tot he rear lights with the help of cable connectors. There are no prepared plugs. Every singly required cable of the rear lights must be connected with the cable of the electrical kit via cable connectors. The poles of the socket need to be screwed to the cables of the electrical kit. The universal electrical kits are fitting for nearly all vehicles that do not have a prepare cable harness. The cable length is sufficient for nearly all vehicles.

What is a specific electrical kit?

This electrical kit is directly attuned to the respective vehicle. It usually has compact plugs that are connected to the respective plugs of the rear lights of the vehicle or according points. In many cases, the socket is already fully connected. The cable length is always designed for the respective vehicle and the installation instruction is created specifically for the vehicle.

What is an electrical kit?

An electrical kit provides electrical connection between the trailor and the vehicle.

What is an adapter for the trailor socket?

You need an adapter e.g. when you have a 13-pole electrical kit, but want to pull a 7-pole trailor. You need an adapter from 13 to 7 pole.

There is also the option of using an adapter from 7- to 13-pole. Here, pay attention that exclusively the fit is adapted, but not the function. This means that e.g. the function of the rear light on the trailor is not adapted.

What is a pivotable trailor coupling?

On a pivotable trailor coupling the spherical head is always fixed to the crossbeam. This system is equipped with a handwheel that needs to be operated so that the spherical head folds downwards. By applying light pressure to the spherical head it is locked into the final position. To pivot the it away, the hand wheel is operated and the spherical head is removed from the lock by lifting slightly. Now the spherical head can be locked under the vehicle again.

What is the difference between a trailor coupling connected from the back and from the bottom?

On the system connected from the back the spherical head intake is visible on some vehicles when the spherical head is removed. A possibly required cut of the bumper cannot always be covered. Exact information can be found under article details of the respective trailor coupling.

The system connected from the bottom completely disappears underneath the vehicle. If a cut of the bumper is necessary, we are able to offer the fitting cover for the cut for many vehicles. It is then listed as accessory for the trailor coupling, reps. can also be included in the scope of delivery. Detailed information is available under the article details of the respective trailor coupling.

What is a trailor coupling connected from the back?

It is a cost-effective version of the removable trailor couplings. On some vehicle models, the bumper needs modification that cannot be covered. Thus, the spherical head intake is visible when the spherical head is removed. Please see the article details of the trailor coupling as to whether this is the case on your vehicle.

What is a trailor coupling connected at an angle from the bottom?

This is a better looking version of a trailor coupling connected from the back, as the spherical head intake is not visible on many vehicle models when the spherical head is removed. This system can be locked and is easy to operate. You can read whether this is the case on your vehicle or not in the article details of the trailor coupling.

What is a trailor coupling connected from the bottom?

The system connected from the bottom is the best looking version of the removable trailor couplings. The spherical head intake disappears completely under the vehicle, so that the outer appearance of the vehicle is not modified. If the bumper needs to be cut, we offer the matching cover for the trailor coupling as an accessory. You can read whether this is the case on your vehicle or not in the article details of the trailor coupling.

What is a sway reduction system?

DThe sway reduction system is mounted on the shaft of the trailor. It prevents „jumping“ or „swaying“ of the trailor on uneven reads. This system is recommended for heavy trailors. Older sway reduction systems demand a minimum height of trailing load to guarantee smooth work.

What do you need a bumper cover for?

With some removable trailor couplings, the bumper needs to be modified. In order for the cut not to be visible when the spherical head is taken off, a bumper cover is mounted.

Please pay attention that not every bumper modification can be covered. This depends on the manufacturer of the trailor coupling and the vehicle.

What do I need a bumper base holder for?

The bumper base holder is mounted in the bumper and reinforces it. At the same time it is also required for the intake of the trailor coupling and the bumper. Only some vehicles resp. trailor couplings and bumper require this base holder. If this is the case, the bumper base holder is shown as an accessory for the trailor coupling.
