Those who want to travel and not remain "tied" to a place are increasingly turning to the motorhome. It offers practically every kind of comfort in a compact space and can be tailored to the needs of the holidaymaker.

No matter whether it is a box van that is more reminiscent of a typical van, an alcove with a sleeping space above the driver's cabin or a camping bus in near-series production, whether as a semi-integrated camper with driver's cab and living area or as a fully integrated luxury liner without separate driver's cab – there is a suitable motorhome for every need. If you are planning an expedition to remote regions, then even motorhomes based on off-roaders or four-wheel drive trucks, such as those from Woelcke, the Mercedes Zetros or the EarthRoamer from the USA, are available.

2. Towbar fitting - prices

We receive many enquiries from customers who want to retrofit their motorhome with a towbar. In this context, the following questions are the most frequently asked:

  • What does the towbar cost?
  • Do you also fit the towbar?
  • How much does fitting the towbar cost?

These questions cannot be answered as easily for motorhomes as for passenger cars. The reason is due to the large number of superstructure and equipment options that are available for motorhomes. Rameder sells motorhome towbars from as little as € 599. The price for fitting very much depends on the complexity of the installation. We have illustrated the whole process for you using our example calculation, based on a typical Knaus Van Ti motorhome.

Motorhome | KNAUS VAN TI

  • Towbar € 559.00
  • + diagonal brace set for Alko chassis € 189.00
  • + 13-pin Top Tronic electrical kit € 152.00

Total costs

€ 900.00

all prices include value added tax

* Vehicle coding is not necessary for every vehicle

3. We sell BOSStow & Linnepe towbars!

We do not manufacture motorhome towbars ourselves, but deliver them with support and at unrivalled favourable conditions in terms of delivery time and costs. For this purpose, we work together with two partners who are international leaders in the field of motorhome towbars and transport solutions for motorhomes. On the one hand, we distribute motorhome towbars from the company BOSStow from Augustfehn (Lower Saxony). This has built up an excellent reputation over two decades and produces the right towbar for most motorhomes. The company LINNEPE Anhängerkupplungen, based in Ennepetal (North Rhine-Westphalia), has more than 50 years of experience with special towbars for motorhomes and has an excellent reputation in the industry. Rameder offers the optimal support with its expertise. From the ordering process to support in case of important questions or even questions about the installation itself – our well-trained team is happy to provide you with comprehensive advice.

4. What do I need to consider when buying a towbar?

As the market leader in the sale of towbars, we really do offer a wide range of motorhome towbars. Basically, when buying and fitting the motorhome towbar, the differences between cars or SUVs and motorhomes are small. In any case, attention must be paid to the so-called D-value. You will find it on the name plate of the towbar. If two D-values are indicated on the plate, only the lower value is decisive for all calculations. The D-value ultimately represents the central measure of towing device strength for the towbar: it indicates the fatigue strength of the device in kilonewtons (kN). It is therefore decisive as to whether the combination is actually stable enough for a long holiday journey.

In addition to the D-value, the permissible total weight of the vehicle and the permissible towing capacity must be taken into account when fitting the towbar on the motorhome. The respective permissible towing capacity and the maximum possible total weight can simply be taken from the vehicle documents. If necessary, you can ask our support service if the towbar is suitable for the desired application. The motorhome manufacturers, but we too, provide information on whether it is possible to attach a towbar at all. In general, most motorhomes have a load-bearing frame. If your camping shell has a rear overhang, you must have a frame extension fitted in addition. This is already fitted at the factory on a large number of models. However, you should always check it for its load-bearing capacity. If it is not sufficiently dimensioned, you must replace the frame extension. The actual fitting of the towbar and electrical kit is otherwise no more complicated than for a passenger car.

5. What types of motorhome are there?

Motorhomes are – depending on the owner's requirements – very comprehensively equipped. Nevertheless, under certain circumstances it may make sense to also fit a towbar. This can be used to take bicycles, boats, sports equipment, horses or even motorcycles and small cars with you without having to give up living or storage space. Regardless of the make and model of motorhome you ultimately choose, a towbar will almost always fit the vehicle. Motorhomes are available in practically every price category and in countless equipment options or sizes – and almost every motorhome can be equipped with a towbar.

6. Motorhome total weight | Worthwhile information

But before you set off on your holiday, however, you should in any case also know the regulations for handling the XXL vehicle combination. These rules differ in the European countries, even if only slightly. The following applies to the UK: combinations with a total weight of up to 3.5 tonnes may be driven at a maximum of 50 miles per hour. If the combination weighs more than 3.5 tonnes and/or is longer than seven metres, the law generally prohibits the use of the right-hand lane on three-lane motorways. In addition, parking on the pavement is not permitted if the combination weighs more than 2.8 tonnes. When combining a motorhome and trailer, these upper limits are usually exceeded because the towing vehicle alone is often too heavy. We know the legal facts and are happy to help you in this respect as well. What we cannot tell for you, of course, is the very important question of whether there is enough space for parking and manoeuvring the vehicle combination on the site of your choice.

Because your motorhome already has a lot to carry with the superstructure, interior fittings, luggage and holidaymakers, knowledge of the axle load and load capacity of your towing vehicle is also important. Axle load means how much weight may be placed on the front and rear axle. The permitted weight is stated in the V5C registration certificate under Section F.1, "Max. permissible mass". As a rule, the permissible axle load can also be found in the owner's manual or on a sign, for example in the engine compartment or in the area of the passenger door. The best way to determine the axle loads is to drive onto the weighing machine first with the front axle only, then with the rear axle only. This is actually most likely to be done on weighbridges, such as those found at waste disposal sites. The load capacity is the difference between unladen weight and permissible total weight, i.e. it actually corresponds to the payload. By the way: parts added onto the vehicle are also considered to be part of the payload.

However, how much weight per trailer can be attached to the motorhome critically depends on whether the trailer has its own brake or not. The towing capacity for braked trailers can be found in the vehicle registration certificate under Part 4 as "Technical permissible maximum towable mass of the trailer" in box O.1. The "towable mass for unbraked trailers" can be found in box O.2 of the registration certificate Part 4. In principle, the regulations for motorhomes and trailers correspond to those that apply to car and trailer combinations. Therefore, the dimensions and weights of your vehicle and trailer as well as the maximum load on axles and trailer equipment are decisive. The crucial questions are: is it possible to operate the trailer as desired in this way? And is there a matching towbar? Vehicle registration, manufacturer's data sheet, our document "Motorhome enquiry" and our support service will help to answer these questions.
