Things to know when buying a towbar

Different types of towbar: rigid, detachable & pivoting

rigid towbar

Rigid towbars

With rigid towbars, the ball rod is permanently connected to the vehicle. This variant is the cheapest and most durable coupling type of towbar. For price-oriented customers, but also for permanent users (e.g. with a cargo trailer), a rigid towbar is highly recommended. In vehicles with parking assistance, however, the reversing sensors may sometimes recognise the coupling ball as an obstacle.

detachable towbar

Detachable towbars

With detachable towbars, a distinction is made between manual or lever systems and automatic systems. Hand and lever systems are economically designed detachable towbars for price-oriented customers and occasional usage. These systems are characterized by a simple and reliable construction, as well as by ease of use.

Automatic systems are the premium class of detachable towbars. Their sophisticated, high-quality mechanisms and innovative operating concepts guarantee maximum load-bearing capacity, as well as optimal appearance and usability.

Pivoting models constitute the most luxurious class of towing hitch. Unsurpassed in comfort and operation, a pivoting towbar allows you to use it immediately and not only gives your car a technical advantage, but also an individual aesthetic.

Small cargo trailers

Owning a small cargo trailer can be very useful for home construction or gardening work. Along with our rigid, pivoting or automatic detachable towbars, we also recommend our wide range of cost-effective manual and lever systems for this type of trailer.

In a nutshell

  • + When buying a trailer hitch, you will always need a matching electrical set.
  • + Rameder covers all use cases with rigid, detachable and pivoting towbars.
  • + If the towing hitch is going to be used frequently, we recommend a low-cost rigid version.
  • + If you are only going to use the towbar once or twice per year, then we recommend a detachable system.
  • + The advantage of detachable systems is that the ball head can be removed when not in use.

Towbar specifications: Nose load, towing capacity, D-value & type plate

Nose load (static vertical mass)

Nose load

The nose load is the vertical force applied to the coupling ball. The values specified by us refer exclusively to the respective towbar. You will find the nose load value of a vehicle either in its registration certificate or the operating manual.

Towing capacity

Towing capacity

This is the load that may be attached to the towing vehicle. Vehicle manufacturers specify the respective towing capacities for each type of vehicle. The values specified by us refer exclusively to the respective towbar, not to the values of the vehicle. These can be found in the vehicle registration document.

The D-value of a trailer hitch is a technical value and serves as the basis for calculating the permissible towing capacity. It corresponds to the theoretical reference force. Once determined by the appropriate design and tested, it remains unchangeable. The D-value is indicated on the type approval plate of the trailer hitch.

Type plate

Anhängerkupplung Typenschild

All towbars, towing hitches and, in some cases, flange balls must be appropriately labelled. You will find all the important information about a towbar on its type plate: the manufacturer, nose load, manufacturer number, approval number, D value and also the type number (if available).

  • + The nose load and the D value can be found on the type plate.
  • + The permissible towing capacity for the vehicle can be found in the vehicle documents.

Difference between 7 & 13-pin electrical sets

7-pin plug

7-pin electrical set

An inexpensive type of electrical set, which is no longer entirely up to date. Towing small cargo trailers is a common area of application. Using a 7-pin electrical set with a bike rack is not legally permitted due to the lack of a reversing light function. Instead, a 13-pin electrical set must be used.

13-pin socket

13-pin electrical set

13-pin sets correspond to the current automotive industry standards. This set features a safe locking system, a splash-proof interior, as well as a reversing light function.

Nearly all 13-pin electrical sets offer the option of permanent plus supply to the trailer and battery charging functionality for caravans and horse trailers. Therefore, 13-pin electrical sets are our top recommendation, especially for caravans.

Important notes

  • + Towing a caravan or horse trailer? Recommendation: 13-pin electrical set.
  • + When using bike racks, a 13-pin electrical set is mandatory.

Towbar manufacturers

Towbar manufacturers In addition to car towbars from renowned original equipment manufacturers such as Bosal, Brink, Oris and Westfalia, Rameder also stocks products from GDW, MVG and Autohak. This gives our customers the security and precision of many years of industry experience and the highest quality standards. Cheap products from the Far East not only tend to have insufficient corrosion protection, but also fit poorly and therefore have to be reworked while mounting them.

This can cost a lot of time and effort - or an expensive visit to a workshop. For test purposes, Rameder experiments with many products in order to be able to guarantee easy towbar installation. In the long term, quality also pays off in terms of wear and tear: Rameder, for example, relies on the CARLOS TC load test, in which the entire life cycle of a towbar is simulated.

Buy towbars online

Car on lifting platform If you are looking for a towing device, Rameder is the perfect place to go. Here you can find out with just a few clicks whether your desired towbar is available and can be retrofitted for your vehicle. If no suitable product is available, it is likely that no other supplier will be able to offer one, also in terms of quality. Rameder is also very often cheaper than retrofit solutions from car manufacturers and third-party suppliers.

Mounting a towbar is much easier than you might expect. We recommend our customers to have the mounting carried out at Rameder's own assembly points. There, we have specially trained vehicle technicians who can carry out the towbar mounting quickly, simply and professionally for you. Especially with new vehicles, it can become an issue when you try mounting yourself. In principle, however, you have two options when it comes to mounting:

Mounting options

  • 1. Do-it-yourself installation with support from trained motor vehicle technicians via a separate technical hotline
  • 2. In the car workshop of your choice via cost estimate*.

* Thanks to the parts management system TecDoc, countless workshops throughout Germany have access to all Rameder products and can provide you with a precise cost estimate thanks to the working time information.
