What is the difference between the individual towbar versions?

Towbar rigid

Rigid towbars

In a rigid towbar, the ball rod is fixed permanently with the vehicle. This variant is the most economical and durable coupling version. For price-oriented customers as also for permanent users (e.g. with cargo trailer), the rigid towbar is a real recommendation. However, in case of vehicles with parking assistant it can happen that the coupling ball is detected as an obstacle by the reversing sensors.

Towbar detachable

Detachable towbars

These are economically designed, detachable towbars for price-oriented customers and for the occasional use. These systems are characterised by a simple, reliable design as well as by ease of use.

Automatic systems are the premium class of removable towbars. Sophisticated and high-quality mechanisms as well as innovative usage concepts guarantee highest load-carrying capacities as well as optimum appearance and usability.

Towbars pivoting

Pivoting towbars

The luxury class of towbars is defined by the pivoting systems. Unsurpassed in comfort and use, a pivoting towbar always enables you an immediate use and gives your car not just a technical value addition, but also an individual appearance.

Which towbar is the right one for me?

Caravans, horse, boat or car trailers as well as bike carriers

Whether you want to go on holiday with your caravan, take your horse to the next riding tournament, transport your boat to the coast, drive your sports car on a racetrack, or simply take your bike carrier with you on a weekend trip or holiday – for all of these application scenarios, you will need a towbar and matching electrical set.

Our comprehensive product range includes rigid, pivoting or automatic detachable towbars from well-known brand manufacturers, which are designed for every scenario imaginable.

Small cargo trailers

Owning a small cargo trailer can be very useful for home construction or gardening work. Along with our rigid, pivoting or automatic detachable towbars, we also recommend our extensive and inexpensive manual and lever systems for this type of trailer.

In brief
  • + When buying a towbar you will always need a matching electrical set.
  • + Rameder covers all application scenarios with rigid, detachable and pivoting towbars.
  • + If the towbar is going to be used very often, we recommend the inexpensive rigid version.
  • + If you are only going to use the towbar once or twice per year, then we recommend the detachable system.
  • + The advantage of detachable systems is that the ball head can be removed when not in use.

What do the specifications of towbar mean?

Bearing load

Bearing load

The bearing load denotes the vertical action of force on the coupling ball. The values specified by us refer exclusively to the respective towbar. The bearing load value of the vehicle is given either in the vehicle registration certificate or in the operating instructions of the vehicle.

Towing capacity

Towing capacity

This is the load, which may be attached to the pulling vehicle. The automobile manufacturers specify the respective towing capacities for each vehicle type. The values specified by us refer exclusively to the respective towbar, not to the values of the vehicle. These are given in the vehicle registration document.

D-value

The D-value of a towbar is an important technical parameter and forms the basis for calculating the permissible trailer load. It corresponds to the theoretical reference force. Once determined by the appropriate design and tested, it remains unchangeable. The D-value is given on the name plate of the towbar.

Name plate

Name plate of the towbar

Every towbar, towing hitch, or in some cases, flange balls, require specific labelling. On the name plate you will find all the important information about the towbar. Starting with the manufacturer, bearing load, manufacturer number, mark of conformity, D-value and, if available, also the type number.

Summary
  • + The bearing load and the D-value can be found on the name plate.
  • + The permissible towing capacity for the vehicle is specified in the vehicle documentation.

What is the difference between a 7 and a 13 pin electrical set?

7-pin electrical set

7-pin electrical set

7-pin electrical set

A more economical, but no longer quite the latest electrical set. A frequent area of use is the pulling of small cargo trailers. Using a bike carrier is legally not permitted owing to the absence of rear lights. Instead, a 13-pin electrical set must be used.

Important instructions
+ Use of caravans or horse trailers? Recommendation: 13-pin electrical set
+ When using bike carriers, a 13-pin electrical set is mandatory.

13-pin electrical set

corresponds to the latest standard in automobile industry. The secure locking system, the interior protected against splash-water as well as the available rear light function speak for this variant.

Almost all the 13-pin electrical sets offer the optional possibility of continuous plus-supply to the trailer as well as charging a battery in the caravan/horse trailer. As such, the 13-pin electrical sets are our best recommendation when using caravans.
