It's not required to connect the cables to a trailer socket. A socket is already connected with this kit.
It is possible to extend pin 9 of the trailer socket to steady plus (to power electric items in the trailer) or pin 9 to steady plus and pin 10 to charge (e.g. a separate battery in the trailer). By adding the extension set you can combine charging and steady plus. It is possible to extend pin 10 of the trailer socket to steady plus to charge a separate battery in the trailer.
