When it comes to somewhat older cars – modern-­era classic cars in particular – maintenance is usually not too high up on the agenda. And this does not only diminish a car’s dependability and comfort but also its safety. But even if you are on a budget, you can easily check things by yourself. Simply remove the cap, dip the check pen into the brake fluid and one of the three LEDs will show the result: green means not too much water, yellow means less than 1% and red means you better exchange the fluid fast because it contains more than 3% of water. Why is that a problem, though?

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, i.e. it binds ambient moisture and dissolves it completely. And this is also required since drop-­shaped water can lead to corrosion, frost damage or even a breakdown of the braking system through local steam bubbles. However, if the level of dissolved water rises above 3%, at very high temperatures these steam bubbles can develop. In contrast to liquids, these are compressible and the system will not have enough pressure and thus not show enough brake force.
