Rameder offers the clever Check-Pen brake fluid tester

Self do – self have (EN)

When it comes to somewhat older cars – modern-era classic cars in particular – maintenance is usually not too high up on the agenda. And this does not only diminish a car’s dependability and comfort but also its safety. But even if you are on a budget, you can easily check things by yourself. The clever Rameder Check-Pen, for example, allows you to check the brake fluid just like that. You can get it at www.rameder.eu for only EUR 38.99.

Simply remove the cap, dip the check pen into the brake fluid and one of the three LEDs will show the result: green means not too much water, yellow means less than 1% and red means you better exchange the fluid fast because it contains more than 3% of water. Why is that a problem, though?

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, i.e. it binds ambient moisture and dissolves it completely. And this is also required since drop-shaped water can lead to corrosion, frost damage or even a breakdown of the braking system through local steam bubbles. However, if the level of dissolved water rises above 3%, at very high temperatures these steam bubbles can develop. In contrast to liquids, these are compressible and the system will not have enough pressure and thus not show enough brake force.
